Join martial arts and mindfulness instructor Joelle Nañawa at Topanga Nursery for an exploration of the art and flow of the martial arts fan, a practice that blends balance, precision, grace, and humble strength.
Together, we’ll slow down, find our center, and move with creative intention as we explore the foundations of this beautiful and historically rich martial arts weapon.
During class, you’ll be guided through:
A brief introduction to T’ai Chi and the history of the fan as a weapon and training tool across martial arts traditions
An invigorating Qigong warm up to awaken the body, connect with the breath, and activate balance
Foundational T’ai Chi stances, alignment, and body mechanics
Essential martial arts fan techniques and movement sequences
The opening section of a beautiful martial arts fan form
All levels are welcome, and beginners are encouraged! Whether you're picking up a fan for the first time or returning to deepen your practice, you'll find opportunities to explore, refine your skills, and challenge yourself at your own pace.
To keep the experience supportive, personal, and hands-on, class size is limited to 12 participants. Training fans will be provided for use during class.
Pre-registration is required to reserve your place.
